What is Adaptive Decorrelation?
There are so many acronyms and technologies assigned to home theater receivers that it is not surprising how confusing it all becomes, not just for the consumer, but to all of us in the industry, as well. In a movie theater, a large number of surround speakers help create an enveloping surround sound experience, but in a home theater there are usually two speakers (sometime four). This can make surround speakers sound like headphones that lack spaciousness and envelopment (unless you are listening to Yamaha's exclusive Silent Cinema). The surround sounds will also collapse into the closest speaker as you move away from the middle seating position. Adaptive decorrelation slightly changes one surround channel's time and phase relationship with respect to the other surround channel. This expands the listening position and creates - with only two speakers - the same spacious surround experience as in a movie theater.

Small Plays Loud (SPL)
For years, the subwoofer design battle has been between high performance and size. With the advent of flat panel television, the trend has been to incorporate small on-wall or in-wall speakers that cosmetically complement these stylish TVs. However, even more so than with tower speakers, these smaller speakers deliver anemic bass, leaving their home theater systems sounding shallow, thin, and lacking in dynamic deep bass. To produce the lowest frequencies with sufficient output has traditionally required big subwoofers that are totally out of place in a room designed around a flat screen TV. With the SPL Series II, Velodyne has solved this bass dilemma. Utilizing powerful amps (1000 Watts of continuous RMS power), massive drivers (multi-layered, Kevlar reinforced, resin cones mounted in die-cast aluminum baskets) and Velodyne's exclusive distortion limiting "Dynamic Driver Control System" assures the tight, accurate, musical bass for which Velodyne is world famous for. Stereophile's 705 Review
Stereophile's February issue features a wonderful review of B&W's new 705. The speaker is one of three featured on the cover and the article itself includes a historical perspective on the B&W factory, technical measurements, and a wonderful recant of the author's personal listening test. We encourage you to click here to read the entire review. The world's response to the new 700 series has been so overwhelming that the normally rich inventories of B&W have not quite reached "in-stock" status - check with our office for availability. For custom installed systems we suggest that you lead your need to some degree.
